A U.S. Model 1850 foot officer's sabre with a presentation history. It was presented to Lt. R. Kramer by the S.L.I., the Summerville Light Infantry, on October 14, 1872. The ricasso is marked Ames MFG Co. Chicopee Mass. The blade is etched with foliate scrollwork and a panoply of arms, the grip is wrapped in ray skin and wire, and the leather scabbard carries the presentation inscription at the throat.
A named and dated presentation sword from a documented maker is the kind of piece a New Jersey collector of American militaria looks for: the Ames marking fixes the manufacturer, the inscription fixes the recipient and the occasion, and the etched blade and wire-wrapped grip are the pattern's standard dress. The scabbard's matching inscription ties the two parts together. Study the inscription and etching in the photographs before deciding; condition details beyond those listed are not provided by the seller.
