An original U.S. Model 1858 smoothside canteen from the Civil War, 7.5 inches in diameter and graded very good overall by the seller. The brown wool cover is present, with newer stitching visible. The pewter is unmarked. The original chain is still attached, but the cork is gone and a wooden stopper has been fitted in its place. The shoulder strap is in good condition with light rust spots.

An original canteen with cover, chain and strap still together is a display piece for a New Jersey Civil War collection, whether it hangs beside a period musket or sits in a case. Take the flaws as listed: newer stitching on the cover, a replacement wooden stopper where the cork used to be, and light rust spots on the strap. They are stated plainly so you know what arrives, and none of them keep it from reading as a complete example.
