An eagle-head officer's saber made around 1830. The 30-inch blade is acid etched and remains mostly bright with some light staining. The hilt is gilded brass with a carved bone grip, and the grip is missing a large chip near the eagle's head. The original scabbard comes with it.
Eagle-pommel swords of this era are collected for the hilt as much as the blade, and this one keeps its gilt and its carving, with the chip in the bone grip disclosed up front rather than hidden. A New Jersey collector of early officer's swords gets a complete piece: etched blade, gilded hilt and the scabbard it left the maker with. Weigh the grip damage against the brightness of the blade and the presence of the original scabbard. The circa-1830 date is the seller's attribution.
