Probable Danish .71 caliber Infantry Musket

Catalogued as a probable Danish infantry musket in .71 caliber, this antique long gun measures 56 inches overall with a barrel of about 41 inches. The barrel is octagonal for its first 9 1/8 inches, ends in a wedding band, and runs round from there to the muzzle. Metal is bright with areas of gray patina; the smooth bore is fair. The top flat carries a backward n, the number 30 and the letters L.K.E., and the front of the lock has a sunk mark reading HMK over a bird.

The stock has an incised cheekpiece and is in very good shape with no cracks or chips. The action works, though the hammer releases at half-cock, so treat this as a display and study piece rather than a shooter. For a New Jersey collector of European military arms it is a well-preserved example, and the markings give a starting point for further research.
