Indian “Toradar” Matchlock Musket, .64 Caliber

An Indian toradar matchlock musket dating to about the 18th century, .64 caliber, with a 51-inch steel barrel and no serial number. The barrel is held to the stock by five bands, two of wire and three of leather, and the leather ones are fragile. Barrel and side plates share a dark brown and grey patina. The buttstock is inlaid with ivory triangles.

This is a worn piece that has clearly been used. The stock shows heavy handling wear with loss along the edges, and the barrel sits loose in the stock, which fits a gun that spent its working life in the field. The action still functions. For a New Jersey collector of early firearms it is an evocative example of a matchlock that was carried rather than displayed; handle the leather bands carefully and treat it as a wall and study piece.
