English Trade Musket

An English trade musket, the light smoothbore fowler type that Britain shipped around the world for trade. This one carries no marks other than London on the lock. It began life as a flintlock and was converted to percussion at some point, and the forend has been restored for roughly a foot back from the muzzle. It shows the hard use typical of these guns, but the action still functions properly.

Trade muskets of this kind were made in both flintlock and percussion forms into the early 1900s, well after cartridge guns took over, and they were traded with native peoples in the American West as well as abroad. They were built light and simple, and they were never a match for the rifles carried by the forces that brought them. For a New Jersey collector this is a piece of trade history to study and display; it is not offered as a working hunting gun.
